Unit 1 - Reinforcement of Basic Computer Skills

• Students will review the names of the computer components. (I.A)
• Students will demonstrate the ability to use both hardware and software correctly. (II.D)

Comments

It may be necessary to give an oral or written quiz to make sure all students have mastered the names of the components and proper handling.

Unit 2 - Basic Keyboard and Mouse Fundamentals

• Students will review the location of letters and numbers on the keyboard. (II.A)
• Students will demonstrate the ability to type words or phrases which interact with the computer. (II.B)
• Students will demonstrate a mastery of the use of the mouse. (II.E)
• Students will demonstrate the mastery of the terms related to the use of the mouse. (II.E)

Comments

Teachers should use new alphabet and number applications if available to review these skills. There may be more time needed for the location of letters than typing actual phrases.

Unit 3 - Macintosh Finder

• Students will begin using the menus of the Finder. (III.A)
• Students will demonstrate the ability to power up a system. (II.F)
• Students will demonstrate the ability to power down a system. (II.F)

Comments

Teachers must stress the importance of using the Special Menu item "Shutdown" to shut down the computer properly.

Unit 4 - Using the Commercial Software

• Students will run teacher selected drill and practice or simulation applications. (III.B,C)
• Students will begin to coordinate their basic keyboard skills with software that allows them to create short written documents. (II.A)

Comments

Important to make software backups of disks students will be using. Important for the teacher to make individualized selections of software. Provide purposes for writing to the students so time isn't wasted trying to decide what to write. Try not to stand and watch over the students shoulder. Let them experiment while making mistakes (that's why you need to make backups!).

Unit 5 - Using the Internet

• Students will use the World Wide Web to extend upon other school curriculum areas. (III.I)
• Students will use a list of teacher selected bookmarks for an introduction to "surfing." (III.I)

Comments

During the school year the teacher should amass several sights which the children can view during a guided class time. Have the students watch the monitor as you guide them through a discovery lesson in Science, Social Studies, or other curricular area using the Web Browser. This activity should be repeated at different sites for different classes on a regular basis.
