Eric Paulsen, Seventh Grade

I am the seventh grade teacher at St. Matthew's Lutheran School. Along with teaching, I also serve as the Technology Director. In my spare time I also coach several of our athletic teams.

My given name is Eric John Paulsen and I was born in Willmar, MN. I spent the next three years there before moving to New Ulm, MN when my father, John Paulsen, accepted a call to Dr. Martin Luther College (DMLC) since renamed Martin Luther College (MLC). I attended school in New Ulm for the rest of my formal education, with the exception of one year in State College, PA, while my father attended Penn State. I received a call to Oconomowoc upon my graduation in the spring of 1989 and have been teaching here since.

I am married to Amy (Hennig) Paulsen and we have two ambitious boys named Michael and Ian and one precocious daughter named Lauren. Life has taken on quite a few more dimensions with these three wild ones about. It is hard to remember what it was like when it was just Amy and myself.

I am an avid outdoorsman, when I can find the time, and enjoy a wide range of activities such as gun hunting, bow hunting for deer, wakeboarding, and motorcycling. However, with the birth of our first son, my wife and I decided that the motorcycle was a thing of the past. After all, it would have proven quite difficult to rig up the car seat on it. We have instead purchased a boat. Our family spends many enjoyable hours together on the lake.

School Computer Information

Our school has thirty-five networked Macintosh computers running OS X. Our faculty has quarterly computer inservice sessions. We cover topics ranging from application usage to incorporation into the curriculum. I run the inservice sessions and welcome any feedback from others who also run their school's inservice.

We added T1 Internet access to our school's network in 1995. We also have a private in-house server with Novell Netware 6. Our Internet servers are Macs. One is a G4 tower server. It handles our email and listserver. The other is ax Xserve which runs our FTP and web services.

School Athletic Information

I have been coaching since I've been here and find it to be one of the most rewarding aspects of teaching. I have coached flag football, basketball for boys and girls, and track.

Prior to my teaching and coaching days, I was an athlete myself. I grew up in Minnesota and played high school football and basketball and participated in track. In college I played on the basketball team. One of the nice things about being 6'6" was the advantage on the court. Now as a teacher that advantage translates into the form of awe on the students part, making classroom management easier.
