Laura Lai, Third Grade

I consider it a privilege and a blessing to teach children God’s Word through daily Bible stories, devotions, and classroom activities. With God’s Word at the center of every day and every subject, students learn academic skills while growing as Children of God.

By using a variety of teaching methods, I strive to make our classroom an environment in which students feel confident and equipped to take on the many challenges of 3rd grade. This includes many hand-on activities in science, social studies, and math. We also work on organizational skills and study skills.

While this is my first year in the 3rd grade room at St. Matthew’s it is actually a return to familiar territory for me. I’ve been teaching for sixteen years. My first year teaching was spent in a 2nd grade public school classroom. Following that year I spent nine years teaching at Lakewood Lutheran in Lakewood, Washington. The first five years I taught a 1st through 4th grade classroom in which the grade combinations changed yearly. Then I became the PreK teacher and continued to teach several subjects departmentalized K-8. Of all the grades I have taught, 3rd grade is one of my favorites!

I am also serving St. Matthew’s as the Early Childhood Director. In this role, I work to unite our early childhood ministry programs so they can be used as an effective tool for nurturing members and reaching out to unchurched families. I also administrate the Before and After School Care programs.

I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education in 1997. I then finished my Master’s Degree in School Administration in 2005. Since arriving at St. Matthew’s I have completed my WELS Synod Certification. I am a Washington state certified teacher, and I am in the process of converting this state license to a Wisconsin license.

My husband and I have five girls, ages 19,18,16, 9, and 7. We live in Watertown, where two of our children attend Luther Preparatory School. Our oldest is a sophomore at Martin Luther College, and our two youngest attend St. Matthew’s. This summer we have all had a lot of fun at the Watertown pool and riding bikes. We also had the opportunity to spend a week exploring Michigan and another week camping at Camp Phillip.
